Are Your Plants Too Dry?

We all know how dry it can become in your home during the winter. You may think that your dryness is just a nuisance, but it is something that has serious consequences for the people and things in your home. Your dry house can cause respiratory problems and increase the frequency of allergies. If you have plants, the dryness can make it difficult to get the proper hydration they need to survive and grow. Luckily, this article will give you the tools to ensure that your plants never become dehydrated.

See What Plant You Have

First, you want to begin by making sure that the plant you have will benefit from an environment with increased humidity. There are some plants that do well in dry or normal conditions. For most plants, like tropical plants, increased hydration can benefit your plants. Below, I will go over some of the things you should keep in mind if you want to increase your plant's hydration.

What Can Help Your Plants

  • Humidifier
        • If you found that your plants would benefit from increased humidity, you should ensure that their environment is at a proper humidity level. Especially during the winter, when people are using heaters more, the air in your home can become very dry. In the case that the room your plants are in is too dry, a humidifier can increase the humidity levels to the optimal amount your plant needs. • Soil
        • Check the soil that your plants are growing in. You need to make sure that your plants are in soil that is in good condition, where the water can be properly filtered to the roots. Plants that are in dry soil have more difficulty growing and getting the proper hydration they need.
  • Placement
        • Most plants need a consistent amount of sunlight. However, you should not put your plant in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. For some plants, this can be damaging and lead them to get dehydrated at a faster rate. Check to make sure that the specific plants you have are getting the proper amount of sunlight where they are placed.
        • Do not place your plants near heaters or any type of device that might dry out your plants.
        • Ideally, plants should be closer to windows or near sunlight. Do not place your plants near doors or places where are variable temperatures and air conditions.
  • Pot
      • The pots that you are using for your plants can affect the levels of your plant hydration. Check the bottom of your pot to make sure that there is proper drainage. Water can build up at the top of the pot and not pass down to the bottom soil. The pot can affect the ability of the water to pass to the bottom soil because of poor drainage.
